One of Cobar’s best known former rugby league players and all-round sportsman, Mathew Gordon has achieved a new career goal and administrative position since his December 2003 lifestyle move to Queensland.

After working as an electrician with the natural gas pipeline company Agility, at its Cobar depot Mathew, his partner Rebecca and their three young daughters, settled in Springfield between Brisbane and Ipswich where he continued to play football and also study for a Master of Business degree.

Following his April 24 graduation at Charles Sturt University’s Albury Campus, Mathew is now employed as a human resources advisor - Transport Mail and Networks Division, Australia Post, Brisbane.

His parents Alan and Margaret Gordon travelled from Cobar for Mathew’s Albury graduation ceremony, which was also attended by his older brother Russell who lives across the border in Victoria.

A keen horse-rider, following the family tradition during his childhood years, Mathew later switched to junior team sport and excelled in rugby league, touch football and cricket.

Playing second row or lock forward with the Cobar Roosters (plus an Under 18 season with Dubbo Macquarie) he represented Group 11 in Under 17s, Under 19s and First Grade and in 2003 was named captain coach of the Roosters.

In touch football he achieved 10 consecutive premierships and also gained Western Region representative honours plus numerous best and fairest awards.

Another favourite sport was cricket and he was a member for more than 10 years of the then RSL Club First XI.

On moving to Queensland he played rugby league with Ipswich for a season and then in 2005 played and coached, with the aid of a number of other Cobar expatriates, his new home-club Springfield to a Second Division premiership.

Following his recent graduation, Mathew is still living in Springfield but is working in his new position as human resources advisor with Australia Post in Brisbane.
