Less than a week after staging an amazing $70,000-plus Cancer Council Relay for Life, Cobar was again a hive of activity last weekend as the harmonious community and sports-loving town celebrated Mother’s Day 2008.
Activities during the weekend ranged from Markets in Drummond Park, a motocross rally, charity golf day, inter-town bowls, junior soccer and netball and an action-packed rugby league clash between the local Roosters and Dubbo CYMS.
Organised by Cobar’s Occasional Child Care Centre, Kubby House, the Markets in the Park attended by hundreds of local residents who took the opportunity to purchase Mother’s Day gifts, plants, garden ornaments, handcrafted artefacts and enjoy outdoor refreshments including a Rotary Club barbecue.
Hundreds more junior soccer and netball players turned out at Ward Oval for regular Saturday morning competition while Saturday evening’s big motocross rally at the Auto Club attracted dozens of local and visiting riders.
A popular charity golf tournament on Saturday resulted in a good roll-up of men and women golfers while a Western Districts Pairs bowls day at the Memorial Services Club was well supported by regional and local competitors.
The highlight of the weekend saw a massive crowd of rugby league supporters roll up to Tom Knight Oval for the Group 11 Mother’s Day match-of-the-round clash between unbeaten front-runners Dubbo CYMS and the Cobar Roosters.
Cobar supporters later celebrated the Roosters’ emphatic 44-12 victory with a smorgasbord evening and entertainment at major sponsor, the Bowling and Golf Club.
According to www.mothersdaycelebration.com, the earliest history of Mother’s Day dates back to the ancient annual Spring festival the Greeks dedicated to maternal goddesses.
The Greeks used the occasion to honour Rhea, wife of Cronus and the mother of many deities of Greek mythology. Ancient Romans also celebrated a Spring festival, called Hilaria dedicated to Cybele, a mother goddess.
