A barren-looking Morelli Park in Cobar’s Kurrajong Circle has been earmarked for a possible multi-phased restoration project, starting with a tree planting day later this month.
Representatives from Cobar’s three major mines, the Cobar Shire Council and the local business community came together to announce the beginning of stage one of the project, which will coincide with this year’s National Tree Day festivities on July 25.
About 50 kurrajong trees are expected to be laid by local school children and community volunteers in a bid to bring the park back to life and make it a haven for children and families living in the area.
The mines and council have joined forces with local contractors who will assist with the relocation of existing underground water systems, clearing off the site where new trees will be planted, as well as plotting out holes for the new trees to begin growing.
The kurrajong trees have been supplied by a local nursery with plans of additional varieties still being considered for the Morelli Park revamp.
Locals have been encouraged to take part in the project, which will end with a barbecue lunch.
