 Late comeback not quite enough

Late comeback not quite enough

15/05/2008 12:43:00 PM
Last Saturday Cobar Blues AFL side played the Lake Cargelligo Tigers at Lake Cargelligo.

It was a warm, sunny day with a tail wind favouring the Tigers in the first quarter.

Despite a good preparation the Blues came out of the blocks slowly, and found themselves down by 46 points at quarter time.

With the wind favouring the Blues in the second quarter they tried to push forward to close the gap on the score board, but Lake Cargelligo countered and put on five goals to two to go into half-time 66 points ahead.

At the half-time break Coach Anthony Quirk made his feeling undoubtedly clear to his players, asking them to lift and be accountable for their opposite players.

In the third quarter Cobar kicked four goals to Lake’s eight.

The performances lifted across the park in the third quarter and Lake was forced to scrap for every goal.

Boosted by the improved performance in the third quarter, the Blues came out and kicked the first three goals of the fourth quarter, and continued to fight Lake for every kick.

Cobar kicked two more goals in the quarter - one being a fantastic individual effort by Travis Dunlevy. He chased one of the Lake defenders deep into the pocket to tackle him and then kick the goal from the boundary line.

Lake could only manage three goals in the last term and Cobar won the quarter 5-4-34 to Lake’s 3-7-25, a moral victory for Coach Anthony.

The final score was Lake 23-23-167 to Cobar 11-13-79 and the best players for Cobar were Murray Robotham (3 goals), Wade McLachlan, Karl Powell, Brendan Rodda (1 goal) and Corey Slater.

The Blues play away at Barellan this weekend.
