Cobar’s mixed indoor soccer competition kicked off last week in sensational style when 25 goals were scored in the game and three games were won in the last minute.
The defending champions M & C Parisi Floorboards kicked off the season on Wednesday night defeating Big Yellow Elephants (BYE) 25 - 0.
For most of the players on BYE it was their first game. They played with plenty of commitment and enjoyment.
The goal scorers for Floorboards were Michelle Lovegrove (5), Doug North (4), Joel Parisi (3), Jade Buckman (1), Roger Munzo (1), Cheryl Peatey (1), Vivian Beehan (1) and two own goals. Best and fairest went to Doug North and Michelle Lovegrove.
The second game of the night was much closer. Gauci’s held on to defeat Sullivans Redbacks 5 - 4. Gauci’s took the lead through Blake Collins before Robert Childs hit back for the Redbacks to level the scores at 1-1. Collins added a second and a goal from Paul Gauci saw Gauci’s leading 3 - 1 at half-time.
After spending much of the first half on the bench, Redbacks star recruit Kudzai Muchirahonda sparked a fightback.
Muchirahonda netted twice to level the scores then Redbacks captain Wade Smith put his side ahead 4 - 3 with only minutes remaining.
A mix-up between Redback defenders and the goalkeeper cost them the game as a failed clearance fell to the feet of Jaimee Cohen who scored into an open net to win it for Gauci’s.
Best and fairest went to Blake Collins and Jaimee Cohen.
On Friday night Chimera’s and Triple Zero’s both won in dramatic fashion. Chimera’s came from behind to defeat CSA 7 - 6.
CSA led 4 - 2 at the break after a dominate display by Juan Pantoja.
Pantoja scored twice as did Naidu for CSA. Josh Harland and Aaron Wyllie scored Chimera’s goals. Chimera’s turned it around in the second half led by Kyle Conner. Conner scored a hat-trick but they were still a goal behind thanks to goal from CSA’s Andrea Thorpe (5 - 6).
With a minute left on the clock Chimera’s had a corner. The ball was played into the box and after finding its way through a number of CSA defenders Zoe Harland latched onto it to score and win the game for Chimera’s.
Best and fairest went to Juan Pantoja and Kathleen Berryman.
Triple Zero’s upset their highly-fancied opponents Golfie 3 - 2.
Golfie were undermanned and were unlucky in the first half as Triple Zero’s goalkeeper Steve Dutton saved plenty of their shots. Triple Zero’s Brock Foster opened the scoring after seven minutes. Robin Chatimba levelled the score for Golfie five minutes before half-time.
Triple Zero’s went ahead again midway through the second half when Ian Hobson scored but Golfie equalised quickly through Michael Warren to setup a tense finish. With 40 seconds left on the clock, Luke Griffiths found the back of the net for Triple Zero’s to seal all three points and cap off a remarkable first round.
Best and fairest went to Steve Dutton and Nyree Munro.
