The annual Far West Rose Bowl was held in Lightning Ridge on the weekend with 157 women golfers converging on the township from such places as Toukley, Gilgandra, Nyngan Bourke, Brewarrina, Orange, Parkes, Grenfell and Warren just to name a few.
The Cobar team of 18 players was the biggest for one town and proved to be a thorn in many a side.
On Saturday a 4BBB was played with each group of four having a local player, which was a great help in finding our way around the very tricky course. Sally Bannister and partner were victorious with a stableford score of 51 points.
Alma Rogers and partner were in third place with 49 points with a number of Cobar women tied on 48 points.
The day of the Rose Bowl turned out to be very warm, although some of the golf played was tepid. With some of our ladies having late tee-off times, coming back in the dark was looking like a real problem - but not to our Brenda ‘Here I Am’ Fugar who attatched a miner’s lamp to her golf hat and was awarded a standing ovation as she made her way down the last fairway.
Our winning golfers on the day were Judy Mitchell who was runner-up in A Grade 18 hole scratch, and Julie Gibson, winner of the C Grade 18 hole handicap, who will now lose quite a few shots off her handicap.
Alma Rogers was outstanding yet again, winning the C Grade nine-hole scratch event. Sally ‘Grandma’ Bannister proved she could do it again by taking the nine-hole scratch in A Grade, and Gloria Hay won the nine-hole nett B Grade title.
Narelle Green’s magnificent tee shot on the 10th couldn’t be matched and she walked away with the longest drive in C Grade.
Cobar also picked up the ‘Malak Rose’ Tophy, though no-one quite knows where it is.
After all the individual winners were announced we waited with fingers crossed to learn who had won the prize we all came for - “And the Far West Rose Bowl for 2008 goes to ... Cobar!”
Our ecstatic team of Julie Gibson, Geraldine Franscisco and Janine Ryan did us proud and Julie’s speech - well, what can I say.
We were well looked after by our hosts and had a great time, and we hope to keep the ‘Bowl’ again when the tournament is played in Nyngan next year.
All last week’s reults will be published next week due to the late arrival back from Lightning Ridge.
Today and Saturday the fifth round of the WGNSW Monthly Medal-Stroke event will be played, and Sunday
