Cobar’s Camels are set to resume their 2008 Western Plains campaign this Saturday with an important match against Gulargambone at Warren’s Victoria Park Oval
The Camels had a bye last week due to Nyngan Rugby Club’s withdrawal from the competition.
The round four match between the zone’s perimeter clubs is part of an exciting day of rugby hosted by Warren, featuring two Western Plains curtain-raiser matches (Warren also takes on reigning premiers Walgett) and the annual NSW Country ‘Cockatoos’ clash with their arch rivals the Queensland ‘Blue Heelers’.
Some junior rugby games are also on the Victoria Park Oval program which will kick-off at 11am and continue into the evening (the representative match is scheduled to start at 5pm).
The draw sees the Warren Pumas play Walgett in the opening Western Plains match followed by Cobar and Gulargambone and the Macquarie Emus versus Coonamble in junior rugby.
According to the Warren Advocate (May 7), the Warren Pumas are planning to host a great day of rugby on Saturday.
The newspaper reported it will be the first time in eight years that country rugby has brought a high class representative fixture to Western Plains Zone.
“Traditionally, the clash between the Cockatoos and the Blue Heelers is a hard and competitive match of rugby,” the Advocate said.
“Spectators will be assured of a great day climaxing with this annual NSW Country/Qld Country clash with two Warren players Dave Greig and Richie Steel in the Cockatoos squad.
“The day will also include two First Grade Western Plains fixtures with Cobar taking on Gulargambone and an exciting clash between Warren and Walgett.”
In last Saturday’s round of Western Plains rugby Coonamble caused a major upset defeating Bourke 33 to 3, last season’s premiers Walgett outpointed neighbours Brewarrina 39-19 and Gular 36 kept Warren scoreless, the Cobar Camels had the bye.
